How to Train Your Dragon Codexery

Barf and Belch

Two heads, one body, and a whole lot of explosive gas.

Barf and Belch are a green, male, two-headed Hideous Zippleback jointly ridden by the Thorston twins. Normally, Ruffnut rides the dragon's right head, named Barf, which can exhale explosive gas, and Tuffnut rides the dragon's left head, named Belch, which can ignite the gas. The heads are usually agreeable, but can have difficulty flying when their riders disagree, and sometimes quarrel as a result.

Lore & Background

Barf and Belch are a single dragon of the Hideous Zippleback species, distinguished by their two heads and shared body. The right head, Barf, exhales explosive gas, while the left head, Belch, ignites it. This makes them a living, flying weapon system. The dragon is ridden by the dimwitted fraternal twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorston, who constantly quarrel and disobey commands. Normally, Ruffnut rides Barf (the right head) and Tuffnut rides Belch (the left head). The heads are usually agreeable with each other, but when their riders disagree, the dragon can have difficulty flying, and the heads sometimes quarrel as a result.

In Their Own Story

The Thorston twins, Ruffnut and Tuffnut, are followers of Hiccup. They constantly quarrel and disobey commands, a dynamic that carries over to their dragon. When the twins disagree, the two heads of Barf and Belch can have difficulty flying and sometimes quarrel as a result. Despite this chaos, the dragon's unique abilities—Barf exhaling explosive gas and Belch igniting it—make them a formidable, if unpredictable, part of the Dragon Riders.

Reader's Guide

Barf and Belch are a green, male, two-headed Hideous Zippleback. The right head, Barf, can exhale explosive gas. The left head, Belch, can ignite that gas. This makes their primary attack a coordinated blast of fire and explosion. The dragon is jointly ridden by the dimwitted fraternal twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorston. Normally, Ruffnut rides Barf (the right head) and Tuffnut rides Belch (the left head). The heads are usually agreeable, but when their riders disagree, the dragon can have difficulty flying, and the heads sometimes quarrel as a result. The twins themselves constantly quarrel and disobey commands, adding to the chaotic nature of this partnership.
